I’m sorry that I’ve been out of the loop with y’all for so long, but it was a long summer. My spouse moved out, and I was trying to find a roommate without luck since I need some help with expenses and daily living. I think things are turning around, though, and I’ll tell you why.
I met Patti Digh through a friend of mine before I moved to the Asheville area. If you don’t know about Patti, she is an author and speaker, a community builder, and an educator and activist. She wrote the books Life Is a Verb and Creative Is a Verb, among others. Back on January 1, 2013, this is what Patti posted on her Facebook page: “I think holding an adult summer camp in 2013 would be loads of fun. Making lanyards! Wine tastings! Writing! Open mic nights! Campfire songs! Cooking classes! Painting!” The first Design Your Life Camp was held that fall. It has since been re-titled Life Is a Verb Camp and just celebrated its fifth birthday at Kanuga Conference Center near Hendersonville, NC.
I spent Thursday through Saturday nights listening, laughing, singing, mingling, painting, and learning. As it is for most mountaintop experiences such as this, there wasn’t enough time to do everything I wanted to do and meet everyone who was there. I went home more tired than I think I had ever been in my life, but I knew my life had been changed for the better. I had words again. I didn’t feel alone anymore. For the first time since I could remember, I felt like I belonged somewhere.
I assumed this would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience; but as soon as I got home, I knew I had to at least try to make it happen again. I found myself setting up a GoFundMe for expenses to go next year and mentally blocked off the dates of November 1 through 4, 2018. I’ll take a ride on Uber or Lyft if need be!
Well, I just found out that there will be three scholarships for people with disabilities this coming year. They cover registration and three nights’ lodging at Kanuga. You are responsible for your own travel expenses. The deadline apply is December 31, 2017. The recipients will be announced by early February 2018.
